Ship with confidence. Ship with Pallet2Ship®

Shipping pallets across the UK or Europe doesn’t need to be expensive, complicated, or inflexible. With Pallet2Ship, it isn’t.

Get instant quotes - online book in minutes, and move anything from a few pallets to a full lorry load with confidence. Whether you ship regularly or only when demand spikes, we make LTL and FTL pallet shipping straightforward, reliable, and cost-effective.

What Is LTL (Less Than Truckload) Shipping?

LTL pallet shipping is designed for shipments that don't require a full vehicle. Your pallets share trailer space with other compatible consignments, reducing costs while still benefiting from professional linehaul and scheduled deliveries.

LTL is typically suitable if you:

  • Ship 1-10 pallets
  • Have flexible delivery timelines
  • Want to reduce costs by sharing vehicle space
  • Ship variable or seasonal volumes

You pay only for the pallet space you use — no wasted capacity, no full-truck pricing.

What Is FTL (Full Truckload) Shipping?

FTL shipping means booking a vehicle exclusively for your freight. Your pallets move directly from collection to delivery without consolidation or intermediate handling.

FTL is commonly chosen when you:

  • Ship 10+ pallets or near-full loads
  • Have time-critical or sensitive freight
  • Want minimal handling and maximum control
  • Need direct, point-to-point delivery

Even if your load doesn't fully fill the vehicle, FTL can still be the most reliable option for urgent or specialist shipments.

Quick Decision Guide: LTL or FTL?

Choose LTL if you:

  • Ship 1-10 pallets
  • Have flexible delivery windows
  • Want to reduce costs by sharing trailer space
  • Ship irregular or seasonal volumes

Choose FTL if you:

  • Ship 10+ pallets or high-volume freight
  • Need fast, direct delivery
  • Have fragile, high-value, or time-critical goods
  • Want a dedicated vehicle with minimal handling

Not sure which option fits your shipment? You can compare services instantly online or review guidance on our Road Freight page.

Frequently Asked Questions

about our FTL&LTL services

Understanding FTL & LTL

FTL means a vehicle is booked exclusively for your freight. Your pallets travel directly from collection to delivery without being consolidated with other shipments. There are no depot stops, no shared trailer space, and no intermediate handling. FTL is the fastest and most controlled road freight option.
LTL means your pallets share trailer space with freight from other shippers heading in the same direction. You pay only for the pallet spaces you use. Shipments are consolidated at regional hubs and delivered via scheduled network routes, making LTL the most cost-effective option for smaller volumes.
FTL gives you a dedicated vehicle with direct routing, fewer handling points, and faster transit. LTL shares trailer space across multiple customers, costs less per pallet, but involves more handling and slightly longer transit times. The right choice depends on volume, urgency, budget, and how sensitive your freight is.
Choose FTL when you are shipping more than 20 standard pallets, when your freight is time-critical or high-value, when you need direct point-to-point delivery, or when your goods are fragile and benefit from minimal handling. The 20-pallet threshold is a general guideline — actual break-even depends on route and rates.
Choose LTL when you are shipping fewer than 20 pallets, when your delivery timeline is flexible, when you want to reduce costs by sharing trailer space, or when you ship variable or seasonal volumes.
Yes. If your freight is urgent, fragile, high-value, or needs to arrive at a specific time, FTL can still be the best option even with a partially loaded trailer. The dedicated vehicle means no depot stops, no consolidation delays, and direct delivery.

Quotes & Pricing

FTL pricing depends on distance, trailer type, total weight, collection and delivery access, and time sensitivity. Because pricing is per vehicle rather than per pallet, the cost per pallet decreases as you fill more of the trailer. Use the quote form on this page or contact our team for an accurate FTL price.
LTL pricing depends on pallet dimensions, weight, route, and handling requirements. The Instant Quote & Book system provides live pricing for most UK and European LTL routes.
FTL typically becomes more economical per pallet when you are shipping more than 20 standard pallets or when the total volume approaches full trailer capacity. For smaller shipments, LTL is almost always cheaper.
Yes, provided all shipment details are accurate. Additional charges may apply if actual weight or dimensions differ from what was declared, or if the pallet was booked as stackable but is non-stackable.
No. All freight charges are displayed before booking. For international shipments, duties, taxes, and customs fees are separate and normally payable by the consignee.
Additional charges may apply for redelivery after a failed delivery, waiting time or detention at loading or unloading, storage at depots, or route changes after dispatch. These can usually be avoided with accurate details and good site access.

Transit Times & Routing

FTL is the fastest road freight option because the vehicle travels directly from collection to delivery. Typical FTL transit times are same day or next day within the UK, and 1–4 working days for European destinations, depending on distance.
Typical LTL transit times are 1–3 working days within the UK and 3–7 working days for European destinations. Transit times depend on routing, consolidation schedules, and customs clearance for international shipments.
Yes, in most cases. FTL avoids depot stops, consolidation, and shared routing. The vehicle travels directly to the destination, which reduces transit time and makes delivery timing more predictable.
Pallet2Ship provides FTL and LTL services across the UK (including Northern Ireland, Scottish Highlands, islands, and all postcodes) and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, and all other EU destinations. For routes outside Europe, contact our team.
Often yes, for UK collections. Same-day FTL may be available if booked early in the day. Next-day collection is usually available on most routes. European FTL bookings should ideally be arranged 2–3 days in advance.

Vehicle Types & Capacity

A standard UK articulated trailer (13. 6 metres loading length) can carry up to 26 standard UK pallets (120 × 100 cm) or up to 33 Euro pallets (120 × 80 cm), with a maximum payload of approximately 24 tonnes. Mega trailers and specialist vehicles may accommodate taller or heavier freight.
Pallet2Ship has access to a range of vehicles through our carrier network, including curtain-side trailers, box vehicles, mega trailers, flatbed trailers, and low-loader vehicles for specialist or oversized freight.
Yes. If your freight requires a specific vehicle type — for example, a flatbed for oversized cargo or a box vehicle for weather protection — declare this at booking and our team will arrange the correct vehicle.
A mega trailer has a higher internal loading height than a standard trailer (typically around 3 metres), allowing more vertical stacking capacity. This is useful for tall pallets or for maximising load volume.

Packing & Requirements

Use a strong pallet base, strap goods securely, and shrink-wrap from base to top so the wrap binds the goods to the pallet. Heavy items must sit at the bottom. LTL shipments pass through more handling points than FTL, so robust packing is especially important for shared-trailer movements. See our Pallet Packing Guide.
Standard UK pallets (120 × 100 cm), Euro pallets (120 × 80 cm), 120 × 120 cm pallets, and oversized pallets are all accepted. Mixed pallet sizes can be combined within the same shipment.
Most LTL network services accept pallets up to 1,200 kg. FTL services can handle heavier individual pallets subject to overall vehicle payload limits (approximately 24 tonnes total).
Forklifts are required for pallets over 750 kg, for oversized pallets, and for all FTL shipments loaded with curtain-side or flatbed trailers where tail-lift is not available.
Yes. Most UK LTL services include tail-lift for pallets under 750 kg. Heavier or oversized freight requires a forklift at both collection and delivery.
Not automatically. FTL vehicles are typically curtain-side trailers and require forklifts at both collection and delivery. If tail-lift is required, declare this at booking.
Yes. FTL is often the best option for oversized freight because dedicated vehicles can accommodate non-standard dimensions. LTL may accept oversized pallets if they fall within network tolerances, but FTL or specialist routing may be required for larger items. See our Oversized Pallets guide.
A stackable pallet has a flat, stable top that allows other pallets to be placed on top during transit. A non-stackable pallet cannot support weight above it. Non-stackable pallets must be declared at booking — failure to do so may result in a surcharge, particularly on LTL services where trailer space is shared.
For UK domestic shipments, no. For UK–EU and other international shipments, ISPM-15-compliant heat-treated wood packaging is technically required. Enforcement varies within the EU but is strictly enforced by countries such as the USA, Australia, China, and Japan. See our ISPM-15 guide.

Customs & Documentation

Yes. Since Brexit, all UK–EU shipments require customs declarations. This applies to both FTL and LTL movements.
You will typically need a Commercial Invoice, HS / Commodity Codes (see our Commodity Codes guide), EORI numbers, Incoterms (see our Incoterms guide), and full consignor and consignee details.
It depends on the service. Groupage (LTL) carriers typically require EORI numbers for both exporter and importer. Courier carriers can handle B2C shipments without a recipient EORI. See our EORI guide.
Yes. FTL shipments involve a single customs declaration covering all goods on one vehicle. LTL shipments contain freight from multiple customers, each requiring separate customs treatment, which adds complexity. However, professional carriers manage this through established customs processes.

Prohibited & Restricted Items

Certain items are restricted or prohibited. Always check our Prohibited & Restricted Items guide before booking.
No. Pallet2Ship does not handle alcohol shipments on any service.
Yes, on selected services with correct ADR documentation and carrier approval. Not all carriers accept dangerous goods, and some destinations do not accept them at all. Contact our team before booking. See our Dangerous Goods guide.
Personal effects are handled via DHL only and require a detailed inventory list and correct customs documentation. All items must be professionally packed and palletised. FTL or LTL network services are not used for personal effects.
New furniture in original manufacturer packaging can be shipped as standard freight on either FTL or LTL. Used furniture is treated as personal effects and must be professionally packed by a removal company. Customer-packed furniture is not accepted.
Yes. Engines must be fully drained of fluids, cleaned, and securely mounted to the pallet. Machinery and industrial equipment must be properly packed and declared. Collection for engines must usually be from a business address.

Insurance & Protection

Yes. Insurance can be added during booking for goods valued between £100 and £50,000. For higher values, contact our team for tailored cover.
Loss or damage during transit when goods are correctly packed and declared.
Only limited carrier liability applies, calculated per kilogram under CMR rules for international movements. This is usually significantly lower than the value of your goods.
Note any damage on the delivery paperwork, take photos, and notify us immediately. See our Claims Process page.

Tracking & Operations

FTL services do not always provide automated tracking links. Dedicated vehicles may provide GPS tracking depending on the carrier. Our operations team can provide live vehicle status updates during business hours on request. If tracking links are available, they will be provided in your booking confirmation email.
Most UK and European LTL services include online tracking once the pallet is collected. For some international or specialist routes, updates may be provided manually by our team. If tracking links are available, they will be provided in your booking confirmation email.
Sometimes, but changes after dispatch may incur additional costs and affect delivery timing. Contact our team immediately if changes are needed.
Possibly, if the shipment has not yet entered the network. Contact our team immediately — the sooner the request, the more likely it can be accommodated.

Collection & Delivery

Collections normally take place Monday–Friday between 08:00 and 18:00.
Yes. Someone must be on site to hand the goods to the driver, sign the collection paperwork, and ensure the pallet is ready on a hard, flat surface accessible to the vehicle.
Yes, but access must be suitable for a large vehicle. Smaller vehicles may need to be arranged at additional cost. Always declare residential deliveries at booking.
Yes, but most LTL network services are designed for business addresses. Residential deliveries may incur additional charges and require tail-lift access.
Inform us during booking — narrow streets, height barriers, weight restrictions, or timed delivery slots — so the correct vehicle and planning can be arranged.

Booking & Practical Considerations

For LTL, use the Instant Quote & Book system on our website to see live prices and book instantly. For FTL, use the FTL quote form on this page or contact our team directly for a tailored quote.
For LTL, 24–48 hours is usually sufficient. For FTL within the UK, next-day collection is often available. For European FTL, 2–3 working days’ notice is recommended. During peak periods, book earlier.
Manufacturers, engineering firms, automotive suppliers, construction companies, retail distributors, e-commerce businesses, and any business shipping palletised freight regularly or in volume across the UK and Europe.
Yes. LTL is particularly well suited to SMEs because you only pay for the space you use, with no minimum volume commitment. FTL is available when larger or urgent shipments are needed.
Incorrect weight or dimensions, non-stackable pallets booked as stackable, incomplete customs documentation, restricted access at collection or delivery sites, and poor packaging.
The pallet may return to the depot and redelivery and storage charges may apply.
Our UK-based operations team is available Monday–Friday, 09:00–17:30, before and after booking.
