How International Pallet Shipping Works

Road Freight — UK and Europe Road freight is the most common and cost-effective way to ship pallets between the UK and European destinations. Shipments travel through European pallet and freight networks with typical transit times of 2-7 working days depending on the country. Economy and express options are available.
Air Freight — Worldwide Air freight is the fastest option for international pallet delivery, with typical transit times of 1-7 working days depending on the destination. It is best suited for urgent, high-value, or time-critical shipments. Express and economy air services are available to most countries.
Sea Freight — Worldwide Sea freight is usually the most economical option for heavy, bulky, or high-volume shipments outside Europe. Transit times are typically 2-8 weeks depending on the port pair. You can choose from door-to-door, door-to-port, port-to-door, or port-to-port options depending on your supply chain. Both full container loads (FCL) and shared container space (LCL) are available.

Freight Services & Transport Modes

Depending on the destination, shipments can travel by road freight (UK and Europe), air freight (worldwide), or sea freight (worldwide). Some routes offer all three options.
Road freight is best for European destinations. It offers economy and express options with typical transit times of 2–7 working days depending on the country.
Air freight is best for urgent, high-value, or time-critical shipments to any destination worldwide. Transit times are typically 1–7 working days depending on the route.
Sea freight is usually the most economical option for heavy, bulky, or large-volume shipments outside Europe. Transit times are typically 2–8 weeks depending on the port pair.
Yes. Full container load services using 20ft and 40ft containers are available for larger shipments. See our FCL & LCL page.
Yes. LCL allows smaller shipments to share container space, paying only for the volume used.
Generally when shipments exceed approximately 13–15 CBM, FCL becomes more cost-effective per unit than LCL.
Yes. Parcel courier services are available for smaller consignments to most international destinations.
Yes. Oversized pallets can be shipped worldwide when dimensions and weight are declared correctly. See our Oversized Pallets guide.
Yes. Full truck load and less-than-truck-load services are available for European routes. See our FTL & LTL page.

Transit Times

Transit times depend on the destination and transport mode:
  • Road freight to Europe: typically 2–7 working days
  • Air freight worldwide: typically 1–7 working days
  • Sea freight worldwide: typically 2–8 weeks
Distance, transport mode, customs clearance, local delivery networks, and seasonal demand all affect transit. Accurate documentation helps avoid customs delays.
Yes. Destinations far from major ports or airports may require additional domestic transport, which adds to overall transit time.

Customs & Documentation

Yes. All international shipments require documentation including a Commercial Invoice with product descriptions, values, and HS codes.
Most international shipments need: - Commercial Invoice - HS / Commodity Codes - EORI number (for UK exporters) - Incoterms - Full consignor and consignee details
Yes. UK exporters need a valid GB EORI number for customs declarations. See our EORI guide.
HS codes classify goods for customs and determine duty and tax rates at the destination. See our Commodity Codes guide.
Common terms include DAP (consignee pays duties) and DDP (sender pays duties). See our Incoterms guide.
Under DAP terms, the consignee at the destination normally pays import duties and taxes. Under DDP, the sender pays.
Our carriers and their local customs brokers handle clearance using the documentation you provide at booking. Our system generates the Commercial Invoice during the booking process.
Most countries outside the UK require ISPM-15-compliant heat-treated wood packaging. Requirements vary by destination — some countries enforce this strictly (USA, Australia, China, Japan), while enforcement in the EU varies. See our ISPM-15 guide.

Prohibited & Restricted Items

Yes. Each country has its own import restrictions and prohibited items. Always check our Prohibited & Restricted Items guide before booking.
No. Pallet2Ship does not handle alcohol shipments on any service.
Ambient, non-perishable food may be accepted on some routes, but many countries have strict import regulations. Chilled or frozen goods are not supported.
Yes, on selected services with correct documentation and UN-compliant packaging. See our Dangerous Goods guide.
Yes, on selected services with full documentation and carrier approval. Not all carriers accept dangerous goods. Some destinations do not accept dangerous goods at all — check with our team before booking.
Yes. Personal effects are handled via DHL only and require a detailed inventory list and correct customs documentation. All items must be professionally packed and palletised.
New furniture in original manufacturer packaging can be shipped as standard freight. Used furniture is treated as personal effects and must be professionally packed by a removal company. Customer-packed furniture is not accepted.
Yes. Machinery must be cleaned, drained of fluids where applicable, and securely mounted to the pallet.

Packing & Preparation

Use a strong pallet base, secure goods with straps and stretch wrap from base to top, and ensure heavy items are at the bottom. International shipments pass through more handling points than domestic, so packing must be robust. See our Pallet Packing Guide.
Standard UK pallets (120 × 100 cm), Euro pallets (120 × 80 cm), and oversized pallets are accepted. Maximum dimensions vary by transport mode and destination.
Air freight typically accepts pallets up to around 1,000 kg. Sea freight and road freight can handle up to 1,200 kg or more depending on the service. Exact limits vary by carrier and route.
Yes. Photos provide evidence in case of claims and help confirm packaging quality.

Insurance & Protection

Yes. Insurance can be added during booking for goods valued between £100 and £50,000. For higher values, contact our team for tailored cover.
Loss or damage during transit when goods are correctly packed and declared.
Only limited carrier liability applies, calculated per kilogram under international transport conventions. This is usually significantly lower than the value of your goods.
Note any damage on the delivery paperwork, take photos, and notify us immediately. See our Claims Process page.

Collection & Delivery

Collections normally take place Monday–Friday between 08:00 and 18:00.
Next-day collection is available across most UK postcodes. Same-day collection may be available on selected services.
Yes. Air freight provides full tracking. Sea freight offers milestone tracking. Road freight tracking varies by carrier.
Yes. Depending on the destination and transport mode, you can choose from door-to-door, door-to-port, port-to-door, or port-to-port options.
