What Happened
A UK customer needed to send palletised machinery parts to a receiver in Argentina. The shipment was suitable for air freight because the goods were time-sensitive and needed to move faster than sea freight.
The sender entered the delivery address and receiver contact details at the time of booking. The goods were collected and moved through the freight network as expected.
The issue appeared at the final delivery stage. When the local carrier tried to contact the receiver in Argentina to arrange delivery, the phone number provided at booking was no longer in use.
Contact details can become outdated for many normal reasons, including staff changes, number changes, old customer records or long gaps between orders. In this case, the number on the booking was no longer the best contact for arranging delivery.
Because the receiver could not be reached, the carrier could not confirm the delivery arrangements. The goods were held at the local depot while updated contact information was requested.
This type of issue can happen even when the address, goods description and customs paperwork are otherwise correct. For international deliveries, especially where the carrier may need to arrange access, delivery timing or final receiver confirmation, a valid local contact number is important.

What Went Wrong
1. The receiver phone number was outdated
The phone number entered at booking was no longer valid. When the local carrier tried to arrange delivery in Argentina, the receiver could not be reached.
2. The carrier could not confirm delivery arrangements
Without a working receiver contact number, the carrier could not confirm the final delivery details. This created a delay at the local delivery stage.
3. The goods were held at the depot
Because the receiver was unreachable, the shipment could not move straight to final delivery. The goods were held while updated contact details were requested, which increased the risk of storage, redelivery or return charges.
How Pallet2Ship Resolved It
Once Pallet2Ship was advised that the receiver could not be reached, the team contacted the sender and asked for updated delivery contact details.
The sender was asked to confirm:
• The receiver’s current phone number
• Whether the number was a mobile or landline
• Whether the receiver could be contacted during normal local business hours
• Whether the delivery address was still correct
• Whether any access restrictions applied at the delivery point
• Whether the receiver was aware that a pallet delivery was due
The sender checked with the receiver and provided a current Argentine contact number. Pallet2Ship passed the updated details to the carrier and asked them to continue with the delivery arrangements.
Once the carrier had the corrected receiver information, the delivery could be reviewed again and rearranged according to the carrier’s local process.
Results
• Outdated receiver contact number identified
• Updated Argentine phone number obtained from the sender
• Corrected details passed to the carrier
• Carrier able to resume delivery arrangements
• Reduced risk of extended depot storage
• Reduced risk of repeated failed delivery attempts
• Reduced risk of return or additional handling charges
What to Do vs What Not to Do
Do This
• Provide a current receiver phone number when booking.
• Use a local Argentine mobile or landline number where possible.
• Make sure the receiver knows a pallet delivery is arriving.
• Check that the receiver can be contacted during normal local business hours.
• Confirm the delivery address and contact name before the goods move.
• Tell Pallet2Ship about any access restrictions before booking.
• Respond quickly if the carrier asks for updated delivery information.
Don't Do This
• Do not use an old or inactive receiver phone number.
• Do not assume an email address alone is enough for final delivery.
• Do not leave the receiver unaware that a pallet delivery is due.
• Do not ignore carrier requests for updated contact details.
• Do not assume the driver can complete delivery without contacting the receiver.
• Do not wait until the goods are already at the depot to check the contact number.
• Do not provide a contact who will be unavailable during delivery hours.
Why It Matters
A valid receiver contact number is important for international pallet delivery.
Even when the goods are correctly packed, the paperwork is complete and the shipment has reached the destination country, final delivery can still be delayed if the local carrier cannot contact the receiver.
This is especially important for long-haul shipments to Argentina, where the carrier or local delivery agent may need to confirm delivery access, receiver availability, address details or delivery instructions before the final delivery attempt.
If the receiver cannot be reached, the goods may be held at a depot while the carrier waits for updated information. Depending on the carrier and circumstances, this may lead to delays, redelivery charges, storage costs, return costs or additional handling.
Checking the receiver’s phone number before booking is a simple step, but it can prevent avoidable delays at the final delivery stage.
A current local contact number helps the carrier arrange delivery more efficiently and gives the shipment a better chance of moving through the final stage without unnecessary hold-ups.
