Pallet Delivery From the UK to EU Mainland

Since the UK departed from the European Union, the process for sending goods to mainland Europe has changed. What was once a simple cross-border movement is now an international export, requiring customs clearance and specific documentation. This can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be complicated.

At Pallet2Ship, we handle UK—EU shipments daily. To help you navigate the process with confidence, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about sending a pallet delivery from the UK to the EU.

What Key Documents Do I Need for a UK to EU pallet shipment?

The most crucial document is the commercial invoice. This is essential for customs clearance in the destination country. Your commercial invoice must include:

  • The sender's and receiver's full details (including contact information).
  • An EORI number for both the UK exporter and the EU importer.
  • A detailed description of the goods.
  • The value of the goods (for customs purposes).
  • The commodity codes (or HS codes) for your items.

Providing a complete and accurate commercial invoice is the most critical step in avoiding border delays.

What Is an EORI Number and Why Do I Need One?

An EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number is a unique ID used to register and track customs information in the EU and the UK. Since Brexit, you need both a UK EORI number to export goods from the UK and an EU EORI number for your recipient to import them into the EU. Businesses that trade internationally can register for these numbers free of charge on their respective government websites.

Who Is Responsible for Paying Import Duties and Taxes?

All shipments from the UK to the EU are now subject to import VAT and potentially customs duties, which are calculated based on the value and type of goods declared on the commercial invoice.

Pallet2Ship sends all shipments on a Delivered Duty Unpaid (DDU) basis. This means the receiver is responsible for paying any applicable import charges levied by their country’s customs authority before the goods can be released for final delivery.

Do I Need to Use a Special Type of Pallet?

Yes. Due to international biosecurity regulations, all wooden packaging material—including pallets—moving between the UK and the EU must be heat-treated to prevent the spread of pests. These pallets must be stamped with an official ISPM 15 mark to demonstrate compliance. Using a non-compliant wooden pallet will result in your shipment being rejected, delayed, or destroyed by customs. Alternatively, you can use pallets made from plastic or presswood, which are exempt from this requirement.

How Long Will Delivery to the EU Take?

While the physical transit time on the road remains relatively fast, the overall delivery timeframe has lengthened due to additional time required for customs clearance at the border. Generally, you can expect a pallet delivery to the EU to take 3 to 7 working days; however, this timeframe may vary depending on the destination and the efficiency of local customs processes.
