The success of an export business also depends on the quality of the packaging, among other aspects. Thus, it is imperative that the markings be complete and accurate in order for the shipment to reach its destination. Thus, there are a number of details you need to pay attention to as an exporter when packaging your cargo.
First of all, you need to make sure that the markings on the cartons you use for packaging are readable by anyone, wherever they may be shipped to, be it Australia, China or any other country in the world. Second of all, you must familiarize yourself with the regulations and laws applicable to the items you want shipped and make sure that they are handled properly. In the end, a shipment is worthless unless the items reach the client in good condition. Last but not least, you need to know when to reveal the contents of your package and when not to do it. Normally, you should be given instructions regarding this aspect by your customer. However, here are a few pieces of advice on how you should handle this issue in order to avoid any unpleasant situations should your customer be unavailable or poorly informed with regard to the packaging requirements.
Let us assume you are shipping your cargo in containers. The first thing you should note is that you want your cargo to be easy to identify in any circumstances. In other words, those in charge of handling it should be able to do so without any hassle regardless of the storage conditions. For instance, the lights in the storage facility may be dim or the batteries on the handlers’ flashlights may die. Therefore, you should mark the cartons in such a way that the markings be visible even in poor lighting conditions or at a distance. Big, bold letters should do the trick.
There are also a number of aspects you should keep in mind as far as the conditions in which your cargo may be stored are concerned. These include the humidity levels, for instance, or dust deposits. It may also happen that grease be spilt over the cartons. Therefore, the use of waterproof labels and markers is recommended. The quality of the adhesive should also be chosen carefully for any unpleasant surprises to be avoided. Otherwise, the risks of addresses being misread and shipments reaching their destination later than estimated are bound to increase.
However, it should be noted that the packaging requirements are slightly different depending on the type of shipment. More specifically, the amount of information to be provided for the identification of items upon shipment in containers is significantly smaller than in the case of items shipped on pallets. Whereas containerized cargo only requires you to consider the few details mentioned above, items to be shipped in cartons and then loaded on pallets require the provision of a few additional pieces of information such as the number of cartons loaded on one pallet or the weight and measurements of your packages, among others.
