Is Your Warehouse Secure Enough?

Posted on Thursday, August 20th by Pallet2ship logo

As you might expect, there are a lot of factors to consider when it comes to storing your products, but the most important of them all is just how secure your storage place is. Whether you have already set up a warehouse or you are just scouting for one, security should be your top priority. Make sure you remember that as you plan your business operations.

Of course, there are just as many aspects to consider when it comes to securing a warehouse. According to experts in the field, the main one is the layout. Let us take a look at a few tips on how to make sure that the warehouse you are planning on setting up is secure enough for product storage.

First of all, opt for a limited number of doors. There should be one main door, through which you enter and leave the warehouse. Make sure that this main entrance and exit door is secure. Also, set up emergency fire alarm bars on all the other entrances and exits to let you know if there have been any attempts to open this main door.

Second of all, you should consider placing dumpsters near the warehouse doors for they might catch any potential thieves for you. Dumpsters have proven to be common drop spots for thieves who cannot carry the stolen goods on them right after the theft. Often times, they choose to drop them here and come back to collect them later on. Should you choose to place them right by the warehouse doors, you should secure them with a lock.

Another important aspect regards the locations of the shipping docks and receiving docks. The risk of theft will be much lower if they are some distance apart. The shorter the distance between the docks, the easier it will be for thieves to move any stolen goods between them. Should there be no other option than to have them close together, you should set up a barrier of some sort to separate them and restrict the access of people other than your staff members.

Last but not least, you should make sure that access to the restrooms or other public areas is from the outside of the warehouse. This has proven to be a very important precaution and rightfully so. By keeping them on the outside of the warehouse you can also keep curious guests away from your merchandise and thus from the temptation of theft.

However, a proper planning of the layout of the warehouse you intend to store your products in is not enough to ensure their safety. This planning will have to be supported by the installation of various security tools and pieces of equipment to ensure a proper protection of your stored goods. These include video surveillance systems and alarms, among others. Only then will you be able to rest assured that your products are secure while your attention is focused on running your courier business successfully.
