Your only concern when shipping a large, heavy item should be the packing process. We always inform our customers that the safety of their cargo also depends on the way the item(s) has been packed and secured, not only on the shipping company. There are two different types of consignments we can handle: a parcel, or a pallet. Firstly, let's talk about parcels. When booking a parcel service, you will be asked to input the dimensions and weight of your parcel.

There are no standard dimensions or weight for large or heavy parcels, however we consider a parcel to be large/heavy when the length exceeds 120 cm, and the weight is over 30 kg. Please be advised that the weight limit for the parcel service is 50 kg. If your consignment is heavier than 50 kg, you may consider looking at the pallet services. Please make sure you use a new box, made of heavy-duty cardboard, large enough to fit your item(s). We also recommend that you use bubble wrap or other protective materials to ensure the goods will not move inside the box, and finally seal the box with tape. An additional step you may wish to take is to add banding around the box the same way you would with tape; this is a good idea for anything epescially heavy.

When it comes to heavy, large pallets, the situation is slightly different. In the next paragraphs, we will explain what a pallet service implies, and what you should expect.

When booking a pallet service you should know that your freight must be placed on a pallet base. There are two different pallet bases you can choose from: the Standard pallet which measures 120cm in Length by 100 cm in Width, and the Euro pallet which measures 120cm in Length by 80 cm in Width. In terms of height, the limit is 220 cm, and on some occasions even 240cm.

As per the services we offer, an oversized pallet is considered anything larger than either 120cm in length, 100cm in width or potentially both. We would like to point out the importance of measuring your consignment correctly and providing accurate information at the time of the booking. For example, for pallets heavier than 750 kg and/or longer than 210 cm, a forklift must be present at both the collection and delivery points.

The cheapest way to ship a large and heavy item

The cheapest but also the safest way to ship large and heavy items is through a pallet service. Especially if we are talking about a shipment outside the continent. In this situation, there are two services available: sea freight and air freight. In terms of pricing, sea freight is far cheaper than air freight, however, it can only handle pallets.

When it comes to the safety of your large and heavy item, we would recommend you consider the pallet service. Pallets are handled with a pump truck and forklift, which automatically reduces potential damages compared to parcels that are handled manually in and out of vehicles and depots. Heavy and large parcels are slightly less safe to handle, as they go through much more manual handling.
