We work with DHL, FedEx, and UPS for air freight, and with Maersk plus established global shipping partners for sea freight via LCL (shared container) and FCL (full container) services. Air freight to Australia and New Zealand typically takes 2–7 working days. Sea freight typically takes 6–8 weeks (around 43 days oceanic transit to Auckland, plus collection and customs handling).
Air Freight to Australia & New Zealand
Air freight is the fastest option for shipments between the UK and Australia or New Zealand. Express air freight services can deliver in as little as 2-4 working days. Economy air freight typically takes 5-7 working days for cost-sensitive shipments.
Standard air freight through DHL handles pallets up to 160 cm in height. FedEx accepts pallets up to 178 cm on key routes including Australia — enter your exact dimensions in the quote tool and the system will show which carriers and services are available.
Major Australian gateways include Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), Brisbane (BNE), and Perth (PER). New Zealand connections are typically through Auckland (AKL). See our Air Freight page for details.
Sea Freight to Australia & New Zealand
Sea freight is the most cost-effective option for heavy, bulky, or non-urgent shipments to and from Australia and New Zealand. Major Australian ports include Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Fremantle (Perth), and Adelaide. New Zealand sea freight is typically routed via Auckland or Tauranga.
LCL (Less than Container Load) lets you share container space and pay only for the volume you use. FCL (Full Container Load) gives you a dedicated 20ft, 40ft, or 40ft high cube container. FCL typically becomes more economical when your shipment exceeds approximately 13-15 CBM.
Delivery options include door-to-door, door-to-port, port-to-door, and port-to-port. Oceanic transit time is typically around 43 days to Auckland and 35-45 days to major Australian ports, with an additional week for collection and customs handling on each end. See our Sea Freight page and FCL & LCL page for details.
Final Delivery in Australia & New Zealand
Once freight arrives in the destination country, final delivery to the consignee’s address is handled through local carrier networks or dedicated transport depending on shipment size and destination. Deliveries can be to business or residential addresses. Business deliveries are typically kerbside or loading bay. Residential deliveries are available but may have different access requirements depending on the carrier, location, and pallet size.
A local telephone number for the consignee is required — local depots in Australia and New Zealand will not call UK telephone numbers. Australia and New Zealand are vast countries with significant distances between major cities and remote regions, so final-mile transit can vary depending on the destination.
ISPM-15 — Strictly Enforced in Australia & New Zealand
Australia and New Zealand have some of the strictest biosecurity and wood packaging controls in the world. All wooden pallets, crates, and dunnage must be heat-treated and carry the ISPM-15 stamp. Non-compliant wood packaging will be rejected at the border, and in shared containers (LCL), one non-compliant pallet can result in the entire container being held in quarantine — affecting every other shipment inside.
For Australian sea freight, two additional country-specific documents apply:
- Packing Declaration — required for all sea freight consignments. Confirms the type of packaging used and that no prohibited materials (such as straw, hay, or unprocessed wood) are present in the container
- BMSB treatment certificate or documentation — Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. Treatment or certification may apply during the seasonal risk period (typically September to April) for goods originating from or transiting through high-risk countries. Exact dates and risk-country lists are set each season by DAFF and MPI; our team will confirm current requirements when you book
Documentation must be accurate and issued before shipment. New Zealand has similar biosecurity controls administered by MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries). Plastic pallets do not require ISPM-15 treatment but may still need to be declared. See our ISPM-15 guide.
Customs & Documentation
All shipments between the UK and Australia or New Zealand require customs documentation. When you book through Pallet2Ship, our system generates the Commercial Invoice during the booking process. You will need commodity codes (HS codes) for each product, EORI numbers, the relevant Incoterms, and Importer of Record details for the destination country.
Most Pallet2Ship exports to Australia and New Zealand operate under DAP (Delivered at Place) — the seller arranges delivery, and the receiver handles import customs clearance, duties, and taxes in the destination country.
- Australia has efficient customs processes administered by the Australian Border Force (ABF) and biosecurity controls administered by DAFF (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry). The Packing Declaration is required for sea freight, and BMSB treatment or certification may apply during the seasonal risk period. Commercial importers usually need an ABN (Australian Business Number) or appropriate importer details for customs clearance.
- New Zealand has similar biosecurity controls administered by MPI. The New Zealand Customs Service handles import duties and taxes. Quarantine requirements are strictly enforced, particularly for organic materials, wood, and food products.
- Documentation language: English is required and accepted across both countries.
For guidance on customs requirements, see our Export & Import guide, Commodity Codes guide, EORI guide, and Incoterms guide. If you need alternative terms such as CIF or DDP, contact our team. We can explain options but do not provide legal or tax advice.
